How To Install Custom Content!
For the dumb and clueless! <3

So, you’ve been eyeing that custom hair, or that custom shirt, and you said to yourself, “Dang, that hair is nice! But, I have noooo idea how to install it?!” Then you give up and cry yourself to sleep.

Has that happened to you? I know I can say that it happened to me, but then I learned how to install custom content, and now my game is great, and my sheets are tear free!

Do NOT:

There is one thing about TS3 CC, that makes it special. Where its placed. Remember with TS2, how your CC went here?
Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads

Well, that’s not where you go to place your Sims 3 downloads. Sure, you can easily mozy on down to:
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Downloads
Yes you can, that folder DOES exist, but, the only items that get in there, are .sims3packs.

So, let’s address this, where do you not go? Your Documents folder. One more time… stay away from the Documents folder, or I will hunt down and eat your offspring.

Getting Started:

There are a few things that you need before you can start downloading custom content. The first, are two folders. Navigate to your Sims 3 Root folder, to get here, follow this path:
C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

Once you are there, right click, and create a new folder called Mods. Once you do that, open up your Mods folder, right click, and create a new folder called Packages.

Getting CC to work for Macs isn’t as easy, but its still fairly do able. You still need to get to your root folder, but its harder for Mac’ers to find. This is what you need to do. Go to your Sims 3 icon, this can be found in your Applications folder. If you placed it somewhere else, go look for it. Then, right click *or control+click* on the app, and select Show Package Content. Now, you’re going to want to follow this path:
Contents/ Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

Once you are there, right click, and create a new folder called Mods. Once you do that, open up your Mods folder, right click, and create a new folder called Packages.

Now, you are ready for CC! Well… almost.

Resource.cfg:
Part 1

Now, before you start placing your package files into your folders, there’s something that you will need to place BEFORE you can even think about having CC in your game. What is that you ask? Its the resource.cfg file. This is the file that allows your game to recognize and accept your custom content files, and without it, CC won’t work.

Click here, to download it, and it is the same for PC and Macs. *You must be logged into MTS to get this file. Log in, or register*

Resource.cfg:
Part 2

Now that you have your resource.cfg file, you are going to need to place it in the correct place.

You are going to need to go back to your Sims 3 Root folder:
C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

Once you are there, just simply drag and drop your resource.cfg file into that folder.

You are going to need to go back to your Sims 3 Root folder:
Contents/ Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

Remember! To get to this folder, you need to right click on your TheSims3.app and select Show Package Contents.
Once you are there, just simply drag and drop your resource.cfg file into that folder.

Downloading CC:

To download custom content, all you really need to do, is just click on the link that says download. Most sites will require for you to register, and that’s easier than eating cookies, so just do that if you need to. If you can, set it so that your .zips or .rars download directly onto your Desktop. This makes it easier for you to find your files, and it keeps your files all in one place.

There are 4 different files that you will come across when downloading custom content:
• .zips
• .rars
• .sims3pack
• .package

Two of them basically install themselves, and two of them, you’re going to have to install yourself.

Extracting & Installing CC:

Now, when you download a .zip, or a .rar file, you are going to need to download a program that allows your computer to open these files, especially if you are on a PC.

If you are on a PC, then your computer does not come with any sort of application that opens and extracts .zips and .rars. If you want to have CC, then you must download WinRAR. *when you click that link, don’t be scared by all the links. Just click on the one that says English, or the language that you speak/read best* WinRAR will open both .zips and .rars.

Now that you have your program, simply open up your .rars or .zips into WinRAR, and let it do the rest! Once it is done, you will have your .package files! Take your .package files, and place them in your Packages folder:
C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages

If you are on a Mac, then you are pretty much set to go! All Macs come with Stuffit! so these will open all .zips, and most .rars. Most, did I just say… most? That’s right, I said most. I had problems with Stuffit, and .rars so I went and got WinRAR for Mac. It will open all of your .rars with ease.

Once you think you’re set, to extract your files, simply double click on their icons, and Stuffit, or WinRAR will do the rest. Take your .package files, and place them in your Packages folder:
Contents/ Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages

Remember! To get to this folder, you need to right click on your TheSims3.app and select Show Package Contents.

Now, if you downloaded a .sims3pack, or a .package, you can simply skip all those steps, and directly place any .package file into your Packages folder. If you get a .sims3pack, just double click it, and it will automatically install into your game, so you don’t have to worry about not installing it incorrectly.

This is Too Much Work:
Are You a PC User? Skip all this riff raff!

If you find that doing this all by hand is too much work for you, get a Monkey to do it for you!
http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=344611

The TS3 Install Helper Monkey will install all of your files for you, so you can sit back and drink tea with your pinky up, and your head held high! Note: This is only for PC users, not Mac users.

Hurray!
You, and your dumb small brain, learned and grew! You can now officially call yourself a custom content user! If you get stuck, come back here to double check, and if you still have questions, or your CC doesn’t work, come here, and I will be glad to answer your questions!

One Last Thing:
Because I Know People Will Ask.

When you install your custom content, wether is a sim, house, or hair, you are going to need to know where these things will show up.

If you downloaded a hair, pattern, or other CAST/CAS item…
• Your item will show up in their correct category, like in the pants, or hair section of CAS.

If you downloaded a sim…
• Your item will show up in CAS, and you must click the icon in the bottom left corner, that looks like 6 shadows of sims.

If you downloaded a home…
• Your item will show up in the lots bin.

Mac users, for Sims 3 sites? Yes, that is right. Some websites don’t work with Safari, so its best if anyone on a Mac uses FireFox.

I hope that this tutorial helps anyone out there that was having CC issues!
Enjoy CC,
Lawertend

  1. Hey there, I pointed this out to Lawertend a while back on his thread, but I’m not sure he ever noticed and updated accordingly; Macs do NOT come with Stuffit anymore, they haven’t for years. If the downloads are .zip files OS X Leopard can extract those without anything else, but for .rar Mac users will need something like Stuffit or The Unarchiver to open them.

  2. Thanks , this will be usefull cuz i get sims 3 at xmas. :)

  3. Hai, I followed your instructions, but they don’t work. I installed Helper Monkey too, but (I forgot what it’s called now :S) it needs another thing in it…. And I’m using Windows 7 and Google Chrome. Does it matter that my EA folder is in ProgramFiles(x86) ?

    Email me an answer? oxleyfreya@aol.com

I don’t have permission to access the forum, if you’re wondering why I’m posting here.

  4. when i download the cfg file and i double click on the sims 3.exe or launcher and i press play a black screen comes on and the game cuts off :(

    • The Resources.cfg file goes in your Mods folder, NOT the launcher!

      Follow this path:

      Start/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

Now create a new folder named Mods, and place it in The Sims 3 folder.

Choose your Mods folder from the list of things in The Sims 3 folder, and copy the Resources.cfg files into this folder. If you did it right you’ll have these three files in your Mods folder:

      Overrides
      Packages
      Resource.cfg

  5. i love cars…. =D but cant get CC :( …. HELP!!!!

  6. I keep getting an error message ugh! Help!

  7. slinky how am i supposed to extract zip and Rar into WinRaR does it do that by itself or what plz answer

    • If you Right Click on a file you can select the option to Extract To… Or Extract Here, and then designate where to extract the files to.

    • You can also use a tool called JZip. It’s free. It does the same job as Winzip and Winrar. Get it here:

      http://www.jzip.com

When you download a Zip or RAR file, right click on the downloaded file. You should get a popup box that gives you the option to:
      Extract With

Choose JZip from the options, and your computer should use JZip for all files of this kind in the future.

  8. Hmm… I’m a Mac OS X user and I followed ever step (or at least i think) .sim3pack -not that i have tried anything else yet- Can be seen in the Sims 3 Launcher Downloads thingie, but when i install them it tell me, :Failed, What do i do?? Even though when i used to be PC user i don’t remember it was all that complicated.

    The Resource.cfg i put it in: Contents/ Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3
Not in the mods/package file i created. Correct?
And the .sims3pack i tried putting it both in the Mods Folder beside the Package folder and then i tried putting it inside the Package folder but neither are working. Did i miss something? Eventhough i have read and reread your tutorial.

At the beginning i didn’t have the Resource.cfg, but even when i had it it still doesn’t differ! and i download stuffit too!

Pleaseeee~~~ help! I’ve been searching for 2 days now !

    • I’m sorry, I can’t help you :( Hopefully someone else who reads this might be able to. Good luck!

  9. Hi Everyone! I just wanted to post another note here that I am unable to help you with technical issues with the custom content. the information provided here was provided to me by someone in the Sims forums. As stated in the first sentence of this page: NOTICE: I do not help trouble shoot the custom content. If you have questions on how to install custom content, follow the forum link below and ask there.

    Thanks for understanding!

  10. Finally a step-by-step on how to do this, it was a great help, thank you!

  11. Check out this website. The Fresh Prince has a lot of well made, custom cars. I use a LOT of his CC in my game.

    http://freshprincecreations.com

Adding CC to your game is actually very easy. First, you need to create a new folder named: Mods and then follow this path:

    Start/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

You need to place the Mods folder you just created right after the Sims 3 folder. The path should look like this:

    Start/Documents/Electronic Arts/ The Sims 3/Mods

In the Mods folder you will need these three files:

    Overrides
    Packages
    Resources.cfg

You can download this framework here:

    If you go here:

This Simmer has an easy to follow Tutorial that will show you all you need to know about adding CC to your game. Her tutorial helped me, and I’m computer illiterate! She’ll have you using CC in no time at all!

    • Are there suppose to be files in the override folder. I’ve tripled checked everything and the custom content is still not showing up.

    • Am I suppose to add these files on the base game or the latest expansion pack?

  12. This is for all Mac OS X users:

Download a program called “The Unarchiver”. It’s free and is a lot easier to use than WinRAR (since WinRAR for Mac is command-line only and I’m sure most of you wouldn’t be able to use it). This program will extract the .zip and .rar files you download.

  13. Now am confused, the mode file sahould it be in c: programe file or my document. Some sites are saying document while other say prigrame files, pls help

  14. how do I get the helper money thing? when I click it it says I cannot access the page or something. and I’m logged in.

  16. Yes you can, that folder DOES exist, but, the only items that get in there, are .sims3packs.

So, let’s address this, where do you not go? Your Documents folder. One more time… stay away from the Documents folder, or I will hunt down and eat your offspring.
Why this and then several other instructions To–then follow this path:

    Start/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3
    so confusing.

  21. ok so I’m a windows user so I have 2 questions (1 How do you get to the Electronics Arts Folder because when I go to Local Disk and then Program Files I don’t see the Electronics Arts Folder. (2 When you open launch your Sims 3 game does it make a folder itself or does there have to be a folder for that, if so how do you make a Sims 3 folder. Sorry to have all these dumb questions this is my first time getting Sims 3 on my laptop and working with cc so please bare with me.

  22. Hello my name is Tatiyana and I have two questions to ask you. I have a pc and I already have the sims content and everything down pack it’s just I sometimes dont see my stuff I downloaded in my game and im trying to find every solution to not delete the mod folder and start all over. Now with this I was looking at some YouTube videos on how to organize my mods better when adding them to the game. (Question 1) With the rar. and package files are they the same thing and do they have to be in separate folders in the main mod folder to be able to work in game. (Question 2) with the sims icon files are they the things you are able to install and have show up on the sims dashboard when starting up the game and or able to see in the installed content on the sims dashboard when starting the game?
